The Ottawa Climate Action Fund has issued a request for proposals (RFP) to assess the potential for low carbon solutions to meet future electricity, heating, and cooling demand in the Kanata North Tech Park.
This study is supported by Ottawa Climate Action Fund, Hydro Ottawa, and the Kanata North Business Association.
Interested proponents are invited to submit proposals through the MERX platform. The posting, which includes additional details, can be found here.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have questions via ocaf[at]ottclimatefund.ca. The deadline to submit questions is January 30, 2026.
The deadline to submit a proposal is February 5, 2026
Project Context
With 540 companies bringing more than 30,000 jobs and $13 billion in annual activity to the local economy, the 550-hectare Tech Park is often described as Ottawa’s “economic crown jewel”. The Kanata North Tech Park has also been designated as a special economic district by the City of Ottawa, and is the largest tech park in Canada. With cascading demand for data centres, advanced manufacturing, and other tech-enabled business development, the Park is poised for significant growth over the next couple of decades.
New business growth in the park will increase demand reliable, affordable energy. That prospect, in turn, creates an opportunity to discover how well solar power, energy storage, thermal networks, and other local clean energy options can meet demand, deliver the secure energy supply that tech companies expect, and relieve some of the expansion pressure facing the Ontario power grid.
Modelling clean energy pathways to meet future demand
Over the last several months, OCAF and Hydro Ottawa have investigated new estimates for the future energy demand the Park can anticipate in the coming decades. This Request for Proposals looks at how best to meet these needs. Based on the priorities identified by Kanata North Tech Park businesses, the RFP asks applicants to investigate and model the following:
- Decarbonization of energy supplies to meet aggressive climate and net-zero targets;
- Controlling energy costs that represent a growing share of companies’ operating costs;
- Meeting advanced tech companies’ need for 100% reliable energy services;
It’s an exciting, ambitious project, and we’re pleased to see it at the starting gate. Click here for a full details on the RFP.
